A fang style putter with added tech - L.A.B Golf MEZZ.1

Straight out of the box, the LAB Golf MEZZ.1 immediately stands out as something different. LAB have really shaken up the golf world in recent years, and this putter reflects that disruptive approach. The design takes some inspiration from the fang style shapes we’ve seen in models like the Odyssey number 7, but pushes it further into a much more angular, geometric aesthetic.

It’s very square, very structured, with a pronounced fang design at the rear that gives it a strong visual identity. The shaft setup is particularly interesting it’s centre shafted, but crucially, it sits slightly behind the leading edge. This isn’t just a design quirk it’s fundamental to LAB’s philosophy around lie angle balance. Visually, it may take a little getting used to, especially if you’re coming from a more traditional blade, but there’s no denying it looks premium. The all black finish on this model, paired with a clean silver alignment aid, gives it a sleek, modern, almost stealth like appearance.

Tech

LAB Golf build all of their putters around one central concept: lie angle balance. The idea is that throughout the putting stroke, the leading edge of the putter remains square to the target line for as long as possible. In theory, this reduces the need for hand manipulation during the stroke, helping the golfer return the face square at impact more consistently and start the ball on line more often.

The MEZZ.1 is a perfect example of this philosophy in action. The slightly rearward shaft position is what enables that lie angle balance, and it’s a defining feature of the design. Once you understand it, the unconventional look starts to make a lot more sense.

In terms of construction, it’s undeniably premium. The model tested features the LAB Golf Press Grip 2 with 3 degrees of forward shaft lean, which is designed to promote better hand positioning at address. That said, this won’t suit everyone, and LAB offer alternative configurations depending on your preference.

Another major strength is the level of customisation available. As a direct to consumer brand, LAB allow you to dial in virtually every aspect of the putter; length, lie angle, shaft type, degree of shaft lean, grip choice, and even head colour. Whether you want something understated like this all black setup or something more vibrant, there are plenty of options. There are also different head styles across the range, from blades to mid mallets to larger mallets like the DF2.1 and DF3.

On top of that, the putter features adjustable weighting through ports in the sole, again designed to fine tune performance and support that lie angle balance. Alignment wise, the contrast between the black head and the silver alignment aid works really well it’s clean, simple, and easy to aim.

Who Is It For?

Mallet putters continue to dominate across professional tours worldwide, with roughly 80 percent of tour players opting for mallet designs over traditional blades. The MEZZ.1 fits right into that trend, offering a solid level of forgiveness without going to the extreme size of something like the DF3.

It sits in a really nice middle ground, large enough to inspire confidence and provide stability, but not so large that it becomes overwhelming behind the ball. There is also a MEZZ.1 Max version available for those who want a slightly larger footprint and added forgiveness.

That said, this putter won’t appeal to everyone. Traditionalists who prefer classic blade shapes may struggle with the angular, modern aesthetic. It’s a very deliberate, almost aggressive design, and that comes down to personal preference.

Where it really stands out is in the technology. The lie angle balance concept has the potential to benefit a wide range of golfers, particularly those who struggle to consistently return the face square at impact. However, getting properly fitted is key. With so many custom options available, understanding your ideal specs is crucial to getting the most out of it.

Given the price point, typically north of £500 to £600 in the UK this is very much aimed at the serious golfer who is willing to invest in performance and explore something different to potentially lower their scores.

Summary

Overall, the LAB Golf MEZZ.1 is a genuinely innovative putter that challenges traditional design in a meaningful way. The combination of lie angle balance technology, premium materials, and extensive customisation options makes it one of the most unique offerings on the market.

The aesthetics won’t be for everyone, and the price is undeniably high, which will be a barrier for some. However, if you’re open to a more modern look and are willing to invest in a putter that is built entirely around performance and fitting, this is a seriously compelling option.

The feel, the balance, and the ability to tailor it exactly to your stroke make it stand out in a crowded market. If you get the chance to try one, or ideally get fitted for one it’s definitely worth experiencing. For the right golfer, this could be a real game changer on the greens.
