The Eleven Tortoise Long Iron: A Tour-Inspired Approach to Traditional Performance

Why "Tortoise"?

Why the name "Tortoise" for Eleven's new long iron? The owners explained it represents a more tour-focused approach compared to their hybrid iron range. This isn't designed to blend with their game-improvement lineup, it’s specifically for players wanting something slightly different with a more traditional profile.

However, "traditional" might be misleading. I've tested both the 2-iron and 3-iron and whilst they look conventional, both deliver maximum launch and maximum MOI (Moment of Inertia) through clever engineering.

Hollow Body Construction

The Tortoise features hollow body construction with a substantial sole that pushes weight low in the clubhead, promoting that crucial high launch we all need from long irons. The hollow face construction provides immediate feedback, you genuinely sense power straight off the face when you catch it correctly.

This combination of low centre of gravity and face flex creates exactly what I experienced during testing: impressive ball speeds with controlled trajectory.

Tour Player Feedback Integration

Setting up behind the ball, there's minimal offset, a direct response to tour player feedback requesting less offset in their profiles. The leading edge almost appears ahead of the shaft entering the head, creating that preferred tour aesthetic.

Looking down at address, you'll notice a slightly thicker topline with an attractive chrome finish. Crucially, you can see the back edge of the club, which resembles a blade profile. This visual creates tremendous confidence because that visible back edge suggests substantial help behind the ball, plenty of MOI and stability for off-centre strikes.

Shaft Options and Quality

Shaft options include both graphite and steel configurations. I tested the graphite shaft in my 2-iron and steel in my 3-iron. Working with a premium brand like KBS, Eleven’s consistent partner provides that extra confidence in quality between your hands and the clubhead. The stability and control are exactly what you'd expect from this partnership.

Real-World Performance

Taking these clubs onto the golf course, I was genuinely impressed with their performance. They achieved the height I needed, delivered the distances I expected, and provided excellent control coming into greens whilst offering genuine power from the tee.

These are strong irons that suit stronger golfers looking to replace either a long iron or hybrid in their setup.

Value for Money

At £129, the Tortoise represents exceptional value in the direct-to-consumer market. Eleven Golf may not lead the mainstream brands, but their pricing strategy makes premium performance accessible to golfers seeking something different from the usual offerings.

For players wanting tour-inspired performance without tour-level pricing, the Tortoise long iron deserves serious consideration as a replacement for bulkier alternatives in your bag.
